Takayuki, you did a very nice job on your web site. Elephants are my favorite animals, because they are so much like people. I've learned elephants have a very good sence of smell and go back to their families graveyard to die. They are family oriented animals.

I absolutely love elephants! I was at Addo Elephant Park in 1996 as I used to live in South Africa. I really miss seeing the elephan ts and the african bush. I live in Newcastle in the UK now which is rath er different to SA! Elephants are such beautiful creatures with such a w onderful sense of understanding. We must do everything we can to keep th ese magnificient creatures on the face of this earth. I remember looking into the eye of an elephant in the Pilansberg National Park in SA and I felt peace and a kinship beyond most peoples understanding.

I have a question regarding issues of film crews in Africa ( and other countries) gathering animal footage for television shows. I th ink there should be a change in the policy that when it comes to a specie s such as elephants (in this case an orphaned baby elephant) that film cr ews be required to contact help for the animal instead of just filming it while it dies. My point of view is this: The film production company, Di scovery, is creating a market for such footage by paying for it, perhaps even ordering it, and encouraging a film crew to allow an animal to needl essly die. In short the crew is getting paid by Discovery to let the anim al die. The argument that, "it would have happened had we not been there. " doesn't apply to such an extreme case. We now have laws that imprison p eople for not aiding a person in need of help, it is the same logic appli ed to an endangered species. The way I see that film crew killed that ele phant by doing nothing. How do you guys feel about this and is there a wa y to stop it from happening again. To explain I am attaching the letter I sent to Wild Discovery and the letter they sent back to me. If you have another department I can write to please let me know. Feel free to forwar d this meassage anywhere. Here is my letter to Viewer_response@discovery.com To viewer_relations@discovery.com Earlier this week I happened to view a segment of Wild Discovery,Savage D iscovery, with graphic visuals and a voice over, dealing with an orphaned elephant, its brutal beating by bulls and nursing females, its struggle to hydrate, and days later, its evisceration by hyenas. While you read what I have to say, please keep in mind that I am a film and documentary producer and director. While watching this show... I had the impression that the film crew could have, but did not, contacted the local authorities who would have saved t he animal (which is on the endangered species list). What do you want to bet that the general audience thinks the same as I? There are too many su ch groups, private and government,... that the film crew could have called .... or radioed... to save the life of the baby elephant. This, however, would not have yielded the shock footage that it seems tha t the crew was really wanting at any cost. I am wondering now about Discovery's practices and policies. What are you paying people, and what kind of people, to gather your shoc k value footage? Will they stop at nothing? If there is nothing to film w ill they make something to film? I am a filmmaker and a writer. I've hea rd all the excesses when it comes to filming animals. I have also worked with the NSF (National Science Foundation), the CDC, and other top organi zations in matters like this. I have also studied sociology and behaviora l sciences at top universities. I am a voice of reason not just a bleedi ng heart. This is the 21st century, our animals are disappearing off the earth. Th is was one baby animal that should have been saved by a 'responsible film crew'under the control of a 'responsible' producer and director. That wo uld have made for a much more entertaining show. I plain to write a lett er of complaint and concern to many people... including the sponsors of W ild Discovery. I am the audience... I am a conscious consumer. I feel that the producers and executive producers demonstrate a dangerous lack of responsible ethics in filmmakeing. I am suggesting everyone writ e a letter of concern to the executive producers, producers and sponsors of Wild Discovery. Sincerely, S.A. House Here is the letter they sent me: We are very sorry our program upset you. We encourage feedback about our shows and will pass your comments on to our program management and executives. This will help them plan for future shows. By their nature, documentaries express the view of the filmmaker and are their personal opinions. Our network intends to present viewers with a window of the world and to expose people to a wide variety of issues. We =92d like our viewers to draw their own conclusions about what they see. In this type of documentary, we show all aspects of nature, good and bad. T he people involved with filming these cannot interfere. Unfortunately, had we not been there it still would have happened. We did realize that this wa s going to be a graphic film, hence the name Savage Earth and the rating (V ) for violence. Feel free to contact us for any further information via e-mail or call us toll free at 1-888-404-5969, Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM (ET). Thanks for taking the time to write. We appreciate it.Sincerely, Viewer Relations So, how do you folks feel about all this. Thank you for your time. Sheila House Sheilahouse@hotmail.com

Your pictures were wonderful. Elephants have always been my favorite animal and I have collected so many elephant figures of every so rt. I think they are the most magnificent of all the species. My daught er was able to go on safari last year and was able to take some marvelous picutres of the elephants (of which she had one enlarged and framed for me for Christmas). I hope someday I may be able to see them in their nat ural habitat (at the present I am limited to Zoos and that will have to d o). Thank you for your wonderful article also on these big guys.

Would you be willing to gr ant permission to me to use one of the photos? I will indicate that the p hoto credit for the elephant is yours.
